16th Century Theatrical Costume

Katherine of Aragon costume, designed by Rob Jones (1996/7) for Jane Lapotaire. (Royal Shakespeare Company). The costume was based on original paintings of the period.  The fully boned bodice with typical trumpet shaped sleeves was attached to an authentically cartridge pleated skirt, worn over a Spanish farthingale.

A more theatrical interpretation of sixteenth century dress (above left) in the RSC's "Cyrano de Bergerac", inspired by commedia dell'arte characters.

Streamlined sixteenth century styling (above right) is still appropriate to the period with a fully boned bodice and bum-roll to provide an authentic silhouette.
