"Moulin Rouge" Dance Costume

In the late nineteenth century the can-can was incredibly shocking, reflecting the vicious street environment in which it was conceived. It evolved out of the continuous high-kicking and raising of skirts popular during the polkas of the 1840s and was not accepted as suitable for ladies and gentlemen. By the time the can-can reached the height of its popularity at the Moulin Rouge, can-can skirts were typically laden with layer upon layer of lace and ribbon decoration, the manipulation of which became part of the standardized can-can moves.

This candy striped gown is highlighted in black with jet decoration. The fully lined corset-style bodice is lightly boned, laces down the back and has elastic inserts at the shoulder to accommodate arm movement. The petticoat consists of layer upon layer of gathered and pleated lace under a full circle skirt.

This costume is available to buy for £200 (for accessories, please enquire) or can also be ordered as a made-to-measure costume; variations are possible such as extra skirt layers or petticoats.
